Aasiaat

Air Greenland welcomes you to Aasiaat

The town is situated amid extensive skerries in the south-western part of Disko Bay. Many of the islands in the region are protected, so birdlife here is rich and varied, Fishing is the main industry in the town but Aasiaat is also North Greenland’s centre of learning, with high school, trade schools and business school. The town’s museum has both a permanent exhibition about the history of Greenland and also changing exhibitions with different topics. In the town’s community hall there is a permanent exhibition of 24 paintings by the famous Danish artist Per Kirkeby.

Explore the skerries by kayak
The skerries are a paradise for kayakers. There is plenty of shelter and calm waters, lots of places to go ashore and an ever-changing view. There are plenty of good spots to put up a tent, but you can also chose to spend the night in a hunting cabin. There is midnight sun in the summer so you can paddle your kayak whenever you please. The tourist office in Aasiaat offers kayak trips from a few hours’ duration up to several days, but you can also rent a kayak and paddle off by yourself.

In close contact with whales
In around 1700, the Aasiaat region was the European whaling centre, but today things are less bloody. During the summer, the whales seek calm waters and you can get very close in a fast motor boat. Each whale species can be recognised, for example, by its blow and by its dorsal fin. In Aasiaat you might see minke whales and humpback whales. The humpback whale lifts its enormous fluke out of the water before it sets course for the depths – but your skipper is very experienced in predicting where it will surface next time.

Skis or dog sled? The choice is yours
From February to April, when the snow and ice lie thick and the light has returned after the dark winter months, it is time for winter adventures. Spend a few hours on a dog sled ride – or even a few days and visit settlements, spending the nights in tents/cabins on the way. Or rent a par of skis at the tourist office and go out onto the cross country ski runs which are found in the hilly terrain. You could even experience the Northern Nights playing across the night sky.
