Narsaq

Air Greenland welcomes you to Narsaq

The town has a spectacular location. On one side there is the high Mount Qaqarsuaq and the long gorge and on the other side Narsaq Sound which is always full of white and turquoise icebergs. Narsaq is situated in the most fertile part of Greenland and sheep farming and agriculture are the main industries. It was here that the Norsemen, led by Erik the Red settled more than 1,000 years ago.

Norse ruins within walking distance
You can start with a visit to the town’s museum which is housed in an old stone building by the colonial harbour (Kolonihavnen). There is, amongst others, an exhibition of the Norse settlers’ presence in the area and the excavations of the ruins close by. You can therefore take a beautiful walk along Dyrnæs Bay to the ruins in Dyrnæs Valley. In the times of the Norse settlers there was a large farm and a church here, and there are warm springs. The water’s temperature is only 5-6 degrees, but it is constant all year round. On the way back, you pass another Norse farm ruin close to the fishing harbour.

Perhaps the most beautiful excursion in South Greenland
This boat trip takes 6-7 hours, but time flies. The destination for the trip is the glacier north of the town and the boat must zigzag back and forth between the countless icebergs. After an hour you can see the glacier in the distance. It seems to topple over the mountainside and as you get closer, the view becomes even more impressive. White expanses of ice are replaced by deep-blue ice grottos and you go ashore on a naked, ice-scoured section of rock between two glacier tongues. You will find it difficult to let go of your camera. After a while, the boat trip continues on to the next glacier and on the way, the skipper will sail past bird colonies and a large waterfall. Remember to look up, because there are often sea eagles in the area.

Walks to suit everyone
The Narsaq peninsular has fantastic opportunities for walks to suit any level of fitness. Many of the sheep farms can provide overnight accommodation, so it is possible to walk on trails and gravel tracks from farm to farm, perhaps staying a few days to follow life on the farm and try your luck fishing.
