Air Greenland welcomes you to Nanortalik
Nanortalik is Greenland’s southernmost town and although its Greenlandic name translates to “the place with polar bears”, the chances of meeting a polar bear are extremely small. Seal hunting is the dominant industry in the region and long hunting trips to Greenland’s east coast are common. Near Nanortalik is the Nalunaq goldmine, which ships out tons of ore each month for processing in Canada.
Vertical mountainsides and ragged peaks
A boat trip through the Tasermiut Fjord is a must when you visit Nanortalik. During the first hour of the trip, the mountains down towards the fjord are low and rounded, but the further up the fjord you get, the more dramatic the changes in the scenery. The mountains get higher and higher, the peaks are pointed and ragged, sometimes hidden by low clouds and the mountainsides are almost vertical. Each year, the area here and further to the south attract mountain climbers from all over the world and the region has been characterised as being one of the most challenging and demanding places to climb. But you can also stay on the boat and enjoy the sight of the enormous glaciers at the end of the fjord. Big, wide, white and as ragged at the mountain peaks behind you.
