Air Greenland welcomes you to Nuuk (GOH)

Nuuk is the capital of Greenland and a quarter of the country’s population lives here. Compared to other towns in Greenland, life in Nuuk can seem hectic, with a lot of traffic, several bus routes, lots of shops and cafés and new parts of town growing up fast. But the town has its own charm. Take a walk down by the colonial harbour and enjoy the old buildings from the 1700’s. Or keep on walking to Myggedalen (Mosquito Valley) with its colourful wooden houses built on the slopes down to the fjord. Don’t forget to visit Katuaq, Greenland’s culture centre, where you can go to plays, concerts and art exhibitions and enjoy a Café Latte in the café.

Nuuk is more than just a town
Being situated at the mouth of one of the largest fjord systems in the world, it’s obvious that you must take one of many boat trips on offer. From early summer to autumn there are many whales in the area and sometimes they swim very close to the shore. There is a good chance of spotting humpback whales. They lift their giant flukes in the air, before they dive into the depths. There are also many minke whales in the area, both individuals and pods. A whale safari is not the only choice – you can also take a boat trip to one of the fjords, to earlier settlements or to the ice fjord, deep in the fjord system.

Skis or snow mobile?
In the winter and in the spring, both choices are possible. In the area behind the airport is Greenland’s longest ski lift – about 1,000 metres long and also a lift which is about 300 metres long. There is an impressive view of the white landscape with the blue fjord in the background from the top of the slope. From here, it’s all downhill on skis or snowboards. For many of Nuuk’s inhabitants riding on snow mobiles is a typical winter pastime. Ask one of the town’s tour operators about the possibility of a snow mobile ride. If you prefer a quieter pace, you can also try the well-prepared cross country ski runs.

On your own in Nuuk
As with all cities, you find out most about the town and its everyday life by jumping on a bus. Do this in Nuuk, and you will experience the busy harbour area, the new, fast-growing suburbs and the centre of town with its shops, restaurants and various cultural institutions – the national museum, the art museum and the national library. In the summer you can play golf on the somewhat peculiar course outside of town and the architecturally beautiful Malik swimming baths is open all year round.
