Air Greenland welcomes you to Sisimiut (JHS)

Greenland’s next largest town is situated almost at the Arctic Circle and offers exciting experiences all year round. Hunting and fishing are still the main industries, but in recent years Sisimiut has also shown itself to be an education centre with exciting, new, technology-based courses and as a centre for entrepreneurs. With its central location and fine overnight facilities Sisimiut is also a popular place to hold conferences and exhibitions.

Arctic Circle Race
Air Greenland is sponsor for the world’s toughest cross-country race. The over 160 kilometre race takes place each year in April. During the race, the nights are spent in tent camps. Dog sleds and snow mobiles bring your baggage to the camps and then it’s up to you, to deal with the three stages of the race. For more than ten years the race has attracted competitors from most of the world, but if cross-country is not your thing, just go to the celebration party, because the whole town takes part in this event.

Inviting landscape
If you follow the road out of town, you can just keep on walking. There is lush, undulating terrain, lakes and streams and good paths to follow – it could hardly be easier. If you continue the walk to Kangerlussuaq, 8-10 days away, you need to be a seasoned walker. If you really want to get to high ground, take a walk to the top of the town’s symbol – the Nasaasaaq Mountain (Kællingehætten). You need to climb and scramble, but the view from the top at 700 metres is well worth it.

Sisimiut should also be seen from the sea
If you want to get away from town, you could visit the settlements of Itilleq or Sarfannguit. The boats are comfortable and fast, and hopefully you will spot seals and whales on the way. If you don’t spot the whales yourself, the skipper will point them out. You will experience a tranquillity and peace in the settlements that is quite different from life in Sisimiut.
