Poul Egedes House in Ilimanaq wins the EU Cultural Heritage Prize / Europa Nostra Prize
Realdania City & Byg receives the European Commission's distinguished cultural heritage award - the Europa Nostra Award 2018, for the restoration of two buildings from the 1700s in the Ilimanaq district: Missionary Poul Egedes house and warehouse.
The two protected buildings are some of Greenland's oldest preserved and protected houses from the colonial era. The buildings were purchased by Realdania in 2013 and in June 2017 the buildings were ready for the public. The manager's residence now functions as a restaurant and lounge. The warehouse is being used for conferences and an exhibition about the restoration.
"I give this year's" cultural heritage winners"who are winners of the EU Heritage Award / Europa Nostra Prize, my warmest congratulations," says Plácido Domingo, the famous opera singer and president of Europa Nostra.
"Our prize winners are the living proof that our heritage is far more than the memory of our past; It is the key to understanding our present and a resource for our future. Therefore, we must use the European Heritage Year to recognize the value of our common cultural heritage for Europe's future, "Plácido Domingo says.
The EU Cultural Heritage Prize - The Europa Nostra Prize was founded by the European Commission in 2002 and celebrates cultural heritage, research, management, volunteering, education and communication activities.
