And the name is…
Air Greenland can today reveal the name of the company’s upcoming Airbus A320neo – a name chosen by the public and carrying a story that connects Greenland with the rest of the world.
When Air Greenland invited the entire country earlier in November to help find the right name, the goal was to find one that reflects our culture, nature, and the way we travel and connect Greenland. The response was overwhelming. By the deadline on 30 November, Air Greenland had received 2,013 suggestions from across the country.
“We are deeply grateful for the tremendous support and the many well‑thought‑out proposals. It highlights the special role Air Greenland plays for Greenland – and how important the naming process is,” says Jacob Nitter Sørensen, CEO of the Air Greenland Group, who forwarded the suggestions to the jury.
Out of the many proposals, 20 were selected for the jury’s first round, where the field was narrowed down to a top 10 and later to a strong top 3.
Jury member and Chair of the Board of the Air Greenland Group, Malik Hegelund Olsen, explains that several of the submitted names appeared multiple times:
“There was one name that was more popular than the others, but when we reached the top 3, that name was no longer in the final round. The discussions continued, and it quickly became clear that the winning name for our A320neo had been submitted by 78 people – a clear sign of its broad appeal and significance,” says Malik Hegelund Olsen, adding:
“The name harmonizes well with the other names in Air Greenland’s fleet and with the aircraft’s function in the broadest sense. That will become clear when people see the video where the name is revealed.”
A well‑kept secret
The jury delivered the chosen name to Air Greenland’s CEO, who informed the company’s board last week, and therefore the aircraft’s name has remained a well‑kept secret until today.
“I would also like to thank the jury for their solid process in selecting the name that will follow the aircraft out into the world and represent Greenland wherever it goes. The aircraft’s ‘birth certificate’ is now ready, so the name can be applied when the aircraft is painted in Air Greenland’s red livery with the Greenlandic flag and the characteristic white dots on the tail."
The jury was given both an exciting and challenging task when the name of Air Greenland’s upcoming A320neo was selected on 9 December 2025.
The jury consisted of the Chair of the Board of the Air Greenland Group, Malik Hegelund Olsen; Mayor of Avannaata Kommunia, Lars Erik Gabrielsen; Chair of Kalaallit Atuakkiortut (the Greenlandic authors’ association), Juaaka Lyberth; Destination Development Manager Linda Kleist from Visit Greenland; HR Director at Greenland Airports, Stina Damgaard; as well as two employees from Air Greenland – Flight Operations Assistant Ciga H. Rydbjerg and auditor Aviâja Møller.
