Qullermiut Final Cool Gray Light (1)

The myth and the name

On board Unaaq, the story of Qullermiut is brought to life through the design of the cabin. In Greenlandic mythology, Qullermiut are a collective of spirits of the sky, closely connected to the northern lights and the mysteries of the heavens. In older stories, they were described as some of the most powerful helping spirits an angakkoq could call upon, but also as beings to be feared. When the northern lights danced across the sky, it was believed that Qullermiut were playing ball with a walrus skull among the stars.

Unaaq was chosen through an open naming competition, where everyone in the community was invited to contribute a suggestion and share the story behind it.

Unaaq is the shaft of a harpoon – the part that carries its force forward and connects the throwing board to the point. It is the connection that enables Norsaq to launch and Tuukkaq to strike.

A name rooted in our culture and history – and with the strength to carry us forward.
